SGS issues SafeGuardS summarizing India’s mandating of national standards and the standard mark for cookware, utensils and food and beverage cans.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 067.24 summarizing India’s measures to control quality in cookware, utensils and food and beverage cans.

The country’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued an order to mandate the use of national standards and the standard mark for these products in March 2024.

The mandated Indian standards are:
• Stainless steel utensils – IS 14756:2022
• Wrought aluminium utensils – IS 1660:2009
• Stainless steel sinks for domestic purposes – IS 13983:1994
• Round open top sanitary cans for foods and drinks – tinplate – IS 9396 (Part 1): 1987
• Aluminium cans for beverages – IS 14407:1996

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that can impact their ability to operate. SafeGuardS 067.24 summarizes ‘Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order 2024’ and includes details of when these standards come into effect.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS for more details.
