Student finance DSA application may need an assessment in 2021

Students applying for DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) in the United Kingdom may be required to have an assessment, which is used to determine any equipment or support the student needs to complete their studies.

Some of the equipment students may be eligible for under the DSA allowance includes computers, labelling, mobility, reading, Braille, sign language interpreter, and note-takers. For students with hearing disabilities, equipment such as hearing aids and sign language may be provided, while those with mobility issues can receive wheelchairs, walkers, and more.

Access for Students is a government-approved assessment centre, that provides assessments to students who are eligible for the DSA allowance. Operating in southern Wales and the South West, this centre has a friendly team who are on hand to meet with students and provide a full report of recommended equipment and/or support the student needs to complete their studies.

DSA allowance has a relatively easy process, which starts with applying for government funding through a funding centre. Once confirmed as eligible the funder may recommend the student has an assessment at a government-approved centre. Once they receive the full report and proof of disability is received, the full decision is made and the student can start studying with confidence.

Lauren Gardener, the Director at Access for Students, said “The student finance DSA application is a simple process which can provide full-time undergraduate students with up to £5,849 for specialist equipment for a whole course, up to £23,258 a year for non-medical support and £1,954 a year as a general allowance.”

Lauren Gardener went on to say “Part-time undergraduate students can get up to £5,849 for specialist equipment needed for a whole course, up to £17,443 a year for non-medical helper support and up to year £1,465 a year as a general allowance. Postgraduate students can receive the support of up to £20,580 a year. These are the maximum allowances; students may not receive these amounts.”

Access for Students is passionate about helping students complete their studies in their chosen field. They work with students of all disabilities, with extensive experience to provide a full report on recommended equipment and support the student needs.
