WHO Country Office for India for educating street food vendors

Assocom Institute of Bakery Technology and Management (AIBTM) and World HEALTH Organisation (WHO) in association with National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), came together for the cause of improving street food safety in Noida. As a first step, the organizations jointly conducted a training session on 25th March, 2015 at the AIBMT auditorium for about 130 street food vendors from the Delhi and Noida. The programme was conceptualized with the aim of bringing the basic GMP/GHP awareness in street food handlers in line with FSSAI requirements. Dr Sadhana Bhagwat, NPO (NCD) from WHO , Ms Sangeeta Singh from NASVI, Head Street Food Programs, NASVI, Mr S.R. Yadav, Chairman of BTW India Pvt Ltd;

Mr. Raj Kapoor, Managing Director, AIBTM in his address urged the street vendors to actively cooperate in the training and thereafter for the technical training planned for the vendors. Mr Yadav, in his warm address, assured the street vendors to provide every support required for the implementation. Mr Ravi Krishna, Member Board of directors, AIBTM set the context for the programme and encouraged the participants to gain maximum benefits. The street vendors were trained for the good hygiene and sanitary practices in a class room session coupled with practical demonstrations by Mr Ravi Krishna, Ms Mahima Khanna (faculty) and Mr Shravan Kumar (faculty) which received huge applause and appreciation. This will program will followed by on-site training for these vendors.

The second part of the session consisted of practical demonstrations on safe cooking, personal hygiene and safe storage of food to the vendors. Great efforts were made by the faculty of AIBTM to set up with detailed charts, other visuals and demonstrations of simple good practices for the vendors. The stalls were based on different generic and specific themes like personal hygiene, good practices for fruits and juice vending centers and more. These demonstrations were well received and highly appreciated by one and all. Ms Sangeeta Singh, Head Street Food Programs, NASVI, along with the members attended the event and appreciated the initiative. Following the practical, the vendors were requested for feedback and suggestions on the program and the implementation approach to which they positive responded. The program in all was an enriching experience for the vendors who learned better food handling practices and promised to practice the same. AIBMT Institute in collaboration with the partners NASVI, WHO and NSDC also intends to take up a pilot project to work with street vendors Noida; the details of the same are being worked out.
