Know all about porcelain Inlays and Onlays by dentist in West Edmonton

More often than not, when we’re in need of dental treatment to repair a cavity or a decaying tooth, we think of traditional dental fillings, maybe even a dental crown. Each of these methods is effective indeed, but did you know they’re not the only options available to you? These days, there are multiple ways to strengthen your teeth and improve your smile.

That’s where dental inlays and onlays come into play. But what are they, exactly?

Inlays and onlays are a reliable alternative to ordinary dental fillings. They’re often recommended when a cavity is too large for a filling to seal. Many dentist in west Edmonton offer this treatment to their patients, and our local dental practice is no exception. Our Aldergrove dentists will be sure to walk you through the treatment from start to finish so you know just want to expect.

This method is best suited to remedying minimal to moderate levels of tooth decay. As its name suggests, an inlay is installed into your tooth. Essentially, it’s used to fill in and seal holes created by cavities that are too large for an ordinary filling to repair. An onlay is a thin covering that’s placed over the top of your tooth in order to stop bacteria and plaque from gathering in the grooves and fissures on the surface of your tooth. As a result, sometimes they’re called partial crowns.

Receiving a dental inlay or onlay is a form of restorative dentistry. Each one is custom-made to fit your tooth so there’s no worry of it slipping out of place or coming loose.

The Benefits of Receiving Inlays and Onlays

There are many advantages to receiving inlays and onlays either here in West Edmonton or at a location elsewhere. Such benefits include:

1. The treatment itself requires little preparation and is minimally invasive.
2. Very effective at repairing minimal to moderate damage to your tooth.
3. They’re resistant to discoloration and stains, especially if they’re fabricated from porcelain or composite resin.
4. They’re a long-term solution.
5. They’re customized to fit the dimensions of your mouth.
6. Regarding materials used to create these devices, they can be made to blend in with your smile.
7. Very stable and durable.
8. They help boost your overall self-confidence!

The Process of Receiving Inlays and Onlays

Before undergoing any form of dental treatment, always be sure to book a consultation with a dentist near you first. They’ll be able to identify whether you’re a suitable candidate for this process. If not, they’ll be able to suggest a more appropriate treatment for your unique case.

Typically, receiving inlays and onlays from a dentist near you requires at least two separate appointments. During your initial visit, your dentist will examine your teeth and take a series of x-rays to develop a detailed image of your oral health, and so they can understand what exactly needs to be amended. Next, they’ll take a mold of your tooth. This is sent off to a dental lab where your inlays or onlays will be created.

Depending on your preferences, they’ll make a note of whether you want your inlays or onlays to be made of metal, porcelain, or resin. Lastly, they’ll give you a temporary inlay or onlay to support your tooth in the meantime. It takes around one to two weeks for your devices to be made.

Once the inlays or onlay are ready, you’ll return to receive them. Your dentist will scrape out any decay or bacteria from your tooth. They may need to drill down into your tooth to remove it all. If this is the case, they’ll administer a local anesthesia injection to keep you calm and comfortable throughout the process. If you require further care during the appointment, don’t hesitate to speak to your dentist. Your dentist will make sure that they fit properly and that your bite remains the same. They’ll also polish your teeth so that they shine before you go.

And voila! A newly repaired smile designed just for you! And only you and your dentist will know you have them.

It’s important to keep in mind that inlays and onlays do not replace brushing and flossing after each meal and coming in for a biannual dental cleaning and checkup. That said, if you maintain good oral hygiene, your inlays or onlays can last up to two decades, perhaps more. There is no guarantee how long they’ll last for as everyone’s oral health is different.

Furthermore, they are ways to ensure that your devices last as long as possible. This includes avoiding grinding or clenching your teeth, especially at night as this is a common nighttime habit. Avoiding solid and super crunchy foods helps too, since biting down may cause the inlays or onlays to crack or weaken.

How Much do Inlays and Onlays Cost?

Dental inlays and onlays are more costly than traditional dental fillings, as the process of receiving them is a bit more extensive. The extent of the damage to your tooth determines how much work your dentist needs to do.

The material used to fabricate the devices also plays a role. Porcelain is more costly than resin, but it is more resistant to stains and easily blends in with your neighboring teeth. Metals, such as gold or silver amalgam are much more noticeable, but they’re also more affordable.

Additionally, be sure to check with your dental insurance provider, as depending on your individual plan, all, or some of the cost of the treatment may be covered.
