The post pandemic job market is extremely competitive as it is but even more challenging without a degree. However, companies are recognizing that well-designed certificate courses often fulfill the requirements needed to perform the job function well. The relevance of skills and upskilling has significantly increased and many job candidates are successfully selected based on their skill set. Larger companies and corporations are hiring based on talent versus degree
Accessibility to the internet has made it easier to acquire skills. Today, everything is available online. Here are some steps to upskill yourself:
• Go to a MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) websites (e.g., Coursera, Udemy, etc.). You can also use NIIT Foundation’s Learn App, which is an application-based learning centre specifically designed for regions with limited internet connectivity. Download Learn now for free.
• Enroll in a course of your choice and relevant to your field. Some trending and sought-after courses are IT support, Digital Marketing, Website Development, Global Service Desk, Data Entry, Android Development and more. Companies like Google itself hire candidates with these certifications. Many courses are available Free but certificate courses generally require a small tuition.
• Complete the course and receive your certificate.
More than 13 lakh jobs are offered by 130+ companies that hire based on online certificates. You can apply for jobs on online job portals or through the company’s websites.
Many start-ups are currently looking for hard-working people to offer jobs and internships. These companies determine the candidate’s potential and whether or not they are willing to learn. Based on their analysis of the individual, they then hire and train people. They often focus on skills and competencies over degrees
One can also venture into freelancing and take up independent projects like copywriting, content writing, etc. Many organizations hire freelancers for short term and long-term projects.
Connections and referrals are another way to be hired. Usually, an influential employee can refer a person for a particular job, based on their previous interactions, with the trust that the candidate will live up to the expectations and help them train for the job.
And finally, some NGOs like NIIT Foundation work to create impact in society by providing skill development training to youth, helping them become more employable and assisting them in placement.
In today’s world, what matters more are the skills and not the degree. NIIT Foundation, a not for profit organization, provides skill development training and certificate courses to students in the age group of 18- 35 years old from underserved backgrounds. NIIT Foundation conducts several career guidance, resume writing, mock interview sessions, and placement assistance to promote employability.
