Leadership and coaching consultant Jeffery D Whippo defines Emotional Intelligence as the ability to recognize, understand and manage our own emotions as well as being able to recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others. He says that the practicality of emotional intelligence is being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people, both positively and negatively and that learning how we can manage those emotions can be critical to successful leadership.
According to Jeffery Whippo, the ability to identify and manage our own and other’s emotions is influenced by our early childhood experiences and even possibly by genetics. He feels that while this may imply that our level of emotional intelligence is firm, it is not rigid and it doesn’t mean that we cannot change our emotional intelligence. However, he explains, while improving our emotional intelligence is absolutely possible, it requires the individual to be extremely serious about wanting to change, dedicated to the work that will have to be done and accepting of guidance during the process.
