Anthony Smith celebrates eleven years as an academic counselor at Berkeley High School, beating the odds that were against him and proving success is possible.

 
Anthony Smith started his career in the education sector as a teacher and worked for different schools in the Berkeley Unified School District. After receiving his Master’s degree in School Counseling from the University of La Verne, he joined Berkeley High School as the academic counselor. He recently completed eleven years of being the counselor at the school and has built up a reputation for being a dedicated and hardworking individual.

Anthony Smith of Berkeley, California was raised in the low-income housing projects in the San Francisco area and has a firsthand experience of what it means to go through difficulty. However, with the support of his mother and the community he beat the odds that were against him and went on to pursue his education and become an academic counselor. He attended Balboa High School and received his bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University before proceeding to complete his master’s degree in 2004.

Over the years, Anthony Smith Berkeley worked as a teacher for a couple of schools in Berkeley and also helped coach multiple teams in basketball, baseball, and track. His commitment to working with students was clearly noticeable through the results the students had academically, as well on the field. Hard work is not something new to Smith as he overcame several obstacles and hindrances to building a successful career as an academic counselor. He has worked hard to support his students and help them achieve success and reach their goals. He is committed to maintaining a strong knowledge of academics and makes sure he is always available is the students need him.

As an academic counselor, Anthony Smith has served the Berkeley Unified School Division well for several years. He also has several years teaching experience having worked as a teacher before becoming a counselor. At Berkeley High School, Anthony Smith managed a case load of over 400 students and rendered personal, academic, social advice, and vocational guidance to ninth to twelfth-grade students. He helped navigate students’ in understanding their high school transcript for graduation fulfillment, and also wrote several letters of recommendation for college admission, internship, and scholarship.
