In 2009, the maternal mortality rate of the state stood 104 deaths per one lakh deliveries and eclampsia (convulsions in pregnancy induced hypertension) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in India. MMR has been brought down to 87 per lakh deliveries in just 3 years bringing Maharashtra to second position after Kerala in bringing down MMR. Better healthcare facilities and provision of good post-delivery care are the major reasons in improvement. MMR in western countries is 20-25 per lakh deliveries against around 220 in India, added Dr. Supriya Puranik.
Dr. Puranik also notifies that the complications are rising because of late age pregnancy. Hence pregnancy in elderly is a major risk factor. Obesity is another risk factor seen because of junk food and lack of exercise. 70% of the women have low vitamin B12 concentration during pregnancy in affluent as well as poor class and in urban as well as rural areas.
Also low maternal level of vitamin B12 have adverse outcome in pregnancy leading to increase adiposity, higher incidence of gestational diabetes, low birth weight babies. These babies when grow up have higher chances of having diabetes at earlier age. Vitamin D deficiency is seen with excessive use of sunscreen lotions, obesity and can cause skeletal deformities and growth retardation in babies, increase risk of gestational diabetes and pregnancy induced hypertension.
Hence, care should be taken to avoid such complications that can lead to such risk factors. Through initiatives like Club Motherhood it is help going to help many to nurture their life with a safer pregnancy.
The program has already had 38 successful registrations with four lectures already completed.
Apart from this Rotary Pune Pride in association with Sahyadri Specialty Hospital Nagar Road has come up with a noble project, ‘Yashoda’ – a human milk bank and portable human milk collector van.
