Wooden Flooring is a product manufactured from timber, designed for use as flooring for either structural or aesthetic purpose. The most important material in wooden flooring is wood, which is available in various styles, colours, and species.
Types of Wooden Flooring:
• Solid Flooring: The solid hardwood floor is manufactured from planks, which are obtained by milling a single piece of timber. The floors are made of real wood. It is mostly used for structural applications and is always installed perpendicularly to the wooden support beam of a building. The solid wood floor has a thicker wear surface for long durability.
• Solid Oak Flooring Distressed Old Chapel: Solid Oak Flooring is a special type of flooring that enhances the grain of the wood. It is highly reliable & stable that imparts good strength. The solid oak floor provides a cost-effective way of having a wooden floor. The design is customized to look worn and weathered with its textured grain, blemishes, and edges. The surface of these floors prevents them from getting scratched or any accidental damages.
• Wood Engineered Flooring: The engineered hardwood floor is made from 100% wood and has the cross grain technology, which makes it 70% more dimensionally stable than the typical solid wood floor. The technology helps to minimize the tension in wood and hence makes the engineered floor, more resistant to shrinkage, gapping and warping. It is also more resistant towards higher moisture level and therefore wooden engineered flooring is considered to be a much more effective choice over solid flooring in the rainy climate. The hardwood floors are resilient towards the tough & changing climates, thus it ensures durability.

Summary: Wooden Flooring, manufactured from timber, is commonly used for structural or aesthetic purpose. There are 3 most common types of wooden flooring - Solid Flooring, Solid Oak Flooring Distressed Old Chapel, and Wood Engineered Flooring. The solid flooring is mainly used for structural application and solid oak floor provides a cost-effective method of flooring. The engineered hardwood is preferred over solid flooring in the rainy climate.
Installation of Wooden Floors
There are different installation systems for the wooden floors:
• Tongue & Groove: One side or end of the plank has a groove, whereas the other side has a tongue. The tongue and grove mates together and align the plank.
• Click or Woodloc systems: It is similar to the tongue and groove, but instead of mating directly into the groove, the curved or barbed tongue is made to fit into the modified groove by tapping the board.
• Floor connection system: This system incorporates groove on all four sides of the plank with a separate, unconnected piece that fits into the groove of two planks so that they can join. These connection pieces are usually made from wood, rubber, or plastic.
• Floating installation: In the floating installation, flooring is laid down in a glueless manner on top of the layer of the underlaid part. The planks are locked together individually but are not glued or nailed down to the subfloor.
• Wood flooring can also be installed simply by using the glue down method. This method is mostly employed for solid parquet flooring installations on concrete sub-floor.
Summary: There are 5 methods for wooden floor installation, namely- Tongue & Groove, Click or Woodloc systems, Floor connection system, Floating installation, and glue down method. All the methods provide an easier alternative for the installation of the floor.
Wooden Floor Finishing Methods
There are 2 most widely popular methods that are employed in finishing the wooden floor, namely- oil-modified polyurethane and water-based polyurethane. Other than that, Natural shellacs, lacquers, and varnishes were used extensively in the past, in addition to waxes blended with oil. The oiled floor is the most common and conventional method employed for the floor finish. The oils used for this process are naturally derived oils. The polyurethane floor finish was first put into application in the year 1942. There are several methods for a polyurethane finish, but out of them, two are the most common, i.e. oil-modified polyurethane and water-based polyurethane. Water-based polyurethane is considered a much safer alternative for usage as it is harder than oil-modified polyurethane.

Summary: There are numerous methods which are being put into use for the finishing of the wooden floor. Natural shellacs, lacquers were extensively preferred in the past. The oiled floor is a very old method for finishing and is still favoured by many. There are two polyurethane floor finishing methods- oil-modified polyurethane and water-based polyurethane, with the later, is considered a much safer option than the former.

The Bottom Line:
Wooden Flooring is used for structural or aesthetical applications. Solid Flooring, Solid Oak Flooring, & Wood Engineered Flooring are some of the types of wooden flooring, used widely. The finishing of the wooden floor is quite easy and natural shellacs, lacquers, and varnishes were used immensely in the past. Currently, oil and water based polyurethane floor finishing methods are employed.
