Keep Swimmer Introduced Nasties (or SINs™) out of your pool this Summer

Here are some great tips from AIS for how to keep your pool sparkling clear and clean (and protect your family and friends) this Summer.

Australian Innovative Systems (AIS) is a proud partner of Swim Australia. Its advanced range or salt, mineral and fresh water automatic chlorine generators keeps pool water safe and clean and stops the need for traditional storage, dosing and handling of liquid chlorine forever.

This Summer make sure you are keeping your pool as clean and healthy as possible by ensuring your family and friends are aware of some basic facts regarding personal hygiene before and when swimming.

The best way to protect your family from waterborne pathogens and disease is to prevent them (the pathogens and disease, not your family!) from entering the pool in the first place. Prevention, as they say, is better than cure, and more to the point preventing contamination in swimming pools is probably the single most important factor to reduce the unpleasant effects of chloramines.

Chloramines are the Disinfection By Product caused when poop, pee, body oils, sweat and cosmetics come into contact with free chlorine. It is chloramines, not chlorine that causes unwanted post-swimming effects such as red eyes, itchy skin, the smell of chlorine on your skin, hair and swimming costumes and that distinctive smell that spoils indoor air quality.

AIS refers to poop, pee, body oils, sweat and cosmetics collectively as Swimmer Introduced Nasties or SINs™. Relatively little research is available on the frequency and quantity of SINs in Australian swimming pools, but overseas studies and common sense suggests that it’s a big problem.

In the USA, the Centre for Disease Control runs an annual public education program with the following very sensible messages:

Keep the pee, poop, sweat, and dirt out of the water!
Stay out of the water if you have diarrhoea.
Shower before you get in the water.
Don’t pee or poop in the water.
Don’t swallow the water.

Every hour—everyone out!
Take kids on bathroom breaks.
Check nappies, and change them in a bathroom or dedicated area–not poolside – to keep germs away from the pool.
Reapply sunscreen.
Drink plenty of fluids.

AIS’ chlorine generators generate chlorine concentration levels inside an electrolytic cell which are high enough to effectively ‘shock dose’ the water as it goes through, playing a key role in combating chloramines in the process.

Let’s all work together to combat SINs (Swimmer Introduced Nasties) and keep our home pools, as well as public pool and aquatic facilities clean, safe and Summer-ready.
