Geneva (May 7, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 060.25, reporting on India’s decision to allow the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food contact materials (FCM) and articles.
The use of PET is controversial due to its significant environmental footprint, the high energy demands of its recycling processes, and the bioaccumulative contamination caused by microplastics as it degrades.
In March 2025, India published Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations 2025 (the Amendment). This permits products made with recycled PET for the packaging, storing, carrying or dispensing of food products, provided the applicable standards and guidelines are notified by the food authority. Originally issued in 2018, the Regulations have undergone several amendments since then, including two revisions in 2022.
The recycled PET-related update under the First Amendment Regulations came into effect on March 28, 2025, the date of its publication in the Official Gazette.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 060.25 includes information about the previous revisions to the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, as well as a link to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSA) authorizing mechanism for manufacturers using recycled plastic in FCM.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 060.25 for more details.
