SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at Brazilian proposals to regulate food contact silicone materials and articles.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 043.24 to provide a summary of Brazil’s two-month consultation over two proposals to regulate food contact silicone materials and articles.

The Brazilian National Health Agency (Anvisa) issued two inter-related proposals in February 2024:

1. Public Consultation No. 1235 of February 26, 2024 ‘Proposal for Resolution from the Collegiate Directorate that provides for the sanitary requirements applicable to silicones used in materials, packaging, coatings and equipment intended to come into contact with food (PC No. 1235/2024)
2. Public Consultation No. 1236 of February 26, 2024 ‘Proposal for Normative Instruction that establishes the lists of substances that can be used in the manufacture of silicones used in materials, packaging, coatings and equipment intended to come into contact with food (PC No. 1236/2024)

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 043.24 covers these proposals and includes a table detailing the impact these two proposals will have on food contact silicone materials and articles, if accepted. This includes exemptions, specific migration limits (SML) and requirements for volatile organic matter (VOM), extractable compounds, peroxides and primary aromatic amines (PAA) and childcare products.

Stakeholders should review the original SafeGuardS 043.24 for more information.

Anvisa is accepting comments on these proposals until May 5, 2024.
