SGS publishes an overview of CEN’s technical specification for the categorization of toy slime type products.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 153.23 to summarize the technical specification for toy slime type products recently issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

Published in October 2023, CEN/TS 17973:2023 – ‘Safety of toys – Categorization of slime type material’ – provides a method for classifying products with slime-like properties and behaviors into one of two categories. These are:

• Category 1: dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable toy materials
• Category 2: liquid or sticky toy materials

Toys covered by the technical specification include:
• Toy slime – free flowing
• Effect slime – creeping slime masses
• Kneading/modelling slime – quasi-stable pliable compounds

It relates to test method EN 71-3 – ‘Migration of certain elements’ – for compliance with Directive 2009/48/EC, the so-call toy safety directive (TSD).

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep interested parties up to date with regulatory and market changes that may affect their business. SafeGuardS 153.23 provides stakeholders with an overview of CEN/TS 17973:2023 as well as details of the migration limits relating to category 1 and 2 toy materials.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 153.23 for more information.
