SGS Summarizes EU Proposal to Ban BPA and Other Bisphenols in Food Contact Materials

SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the EU’s proposal to restrict/prohibit the use of BPA and other bisphenols in food contact materials and articles.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 032.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of a consultation being held in the European Union (EU) to ban bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols in food contact materials and articles.

On February 9, 2024, the European Commission initiated a four-week consultation on a proposal to restrict/prohibit BPA in food contact materials and articles. In addition, it would also regulate other bisphenols and their derivatives, with derogations and transitional periods. This follows the publishing of an updated opinion by the European Food Safety Authority in 2023 that concluded BPA exerts several adverse effects, including upon the immune system.

BPA is used in the manufacture of several food contact materials and articles, including adhesives, ion-exchange resins, printing inks, rubber, epoxy resins in varnishes and coatings applied to metal packaging such as cans, tins and jar lids, as well as polycarbonate and polysulfone plastics for storage and processing equipment.

SGS experts published SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 032.24 contains an overview of the EU’s decision, information on Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 and its revisions, and a table summarizing the main points in the draft regulation currently under consideration.

Comments on the draft regulation will be accepted until March 8, 2024. If accept, it will be implemented in phases from the twentieth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).
