SGS publishes SafeGuardS 134.23 to keep stakeholders informed about California’s new ban on textile fiberglass in mattresses, juvenile products and upholstered furniture.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 134.23 to help stakeholders understand California’s ban on textiles fiberglass in a variety of consumer products.

AB 1059 was signed into law on October 8, 2023, and will come into effect on January 1, 2027. It will restrict the use of textile fiberglass in:
• Mattresses
• Juvenile products
• Upholstered furniture

Textile fiberglass is defined as a textile yarn whose composition includes one or more continuous glass filaments in a form suitable for knitting, weaving or otherwise intertwining to form a textile fabric.

AB 1059 expands Article 5.5 to Chapter 3, Division 8 of the Business and Professions Code, which currently restricts flame retardants in these products, to include the ban on textile fiberglass. It also extends the existing ban on flame retardants to cover all mattress components, not just mattress foam. Stakeholders should be aware components for adult mattresses, other than the foam, will still be exempted until January 1, 2027.

SafeGuardS 134.23 contains more details on the new law to help stakeholders stay informed and compliant with Californian law.
