SGS Summarizes New Zealand’s Proposed Revision to Lead Requirements for Paints and Graphic Materials

Posted November 28, 2023 by BenChristie

SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at New Zealand’s proposal to amend several group standards on lead requirements for paints and graphic materials.

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 155.23 to keep stakeholders informed about New Zealand’s proposal to revise its lead requirements for paints and graphic materials.

The proposed changes were announced by the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in October 2023. If accepted, they will reduce the risks associated with lead in corrosion inhibitors and graphic materials such as crayons, finger paints and felt-tip pens. It would revise several group standards:
• Six aerosol group standards
• Six corrosion inhibitor group standards
• One graphic materials group standard
• 24 surface coatings and colorants group standards

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep interested parties informed about regulatory and market changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 155.23 summarizes the proposal and includes a table with highlights of the proposed changes.

Stakeholders should review SafeGuardS 155.23 for more details.

The New Zealand EPA will accept comments on the proposal until January 26, 2024.
