SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at Brazil’s consultations over potential revisions to the requirements for food contact materials.

The National Health Agency (Anvisa) issued two draft resolutions for consultation in March 2024.

These are:
• Public Consultation Document No. 1241 of March 20, 2024 ‘Draft Resolution of the Collegiate Board – RDC to amend the positive list of monomers, other starting substances and polymers authorized for the production of plastic packaging and equipment in contact with food under Resolution of the Collegiate Board – RDC No. 56 of November 16, 2021’ (PC No 1241/2024)

• Public Consultation Document No. 1244 of March 20, 2024 ‘Draft Resolution of the Collegiate Board – RDC to amend Resolution of the Collegiate Board – RDC No.326 of December 3, 2019, which establishes the positive list of additives intended for the production of plastic materials and polymeric coatings in contact with food (PC No. 1244/2024)

If accepted, PC No 1241/2024 would add tetramethyl bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (TMBPF-DGE), with specifications, to the authorized list of monomers and other starting substances, and polyamide-imide 2 (PAI-2), with specifications, to the list of authorized polymers. PC No. 1244/2024 would add silver-magnesium-sodium-boron phosphate (silver glass) and diethylaminoethanol, with specifications, to table 1 of the Annex.

Stakeholders have until May 14 and May 28, 2024, respectively, to comment on PC No 1241/2024 and PC No. 1244/2024.
