SGS highlights recent amendments to Great Britain’s POPs Regulation, removing restrictions on Dechlorane Plus (DP) and UV-328 in critical healthcare applications.

Geneva (June 23, 2025) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 078.25, outlining the UK’s latest amendment to its retained Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation, which allows the continued use of two restricted substances in medical technology applications.

Effective May 21, 2025, Persistent Organic Pollutants (Amendment) (No. 3) Regulations 2025 (UK SI 2025/605) removes Dechlorane Plus (DP) and UV-328 from Part A of Annex I of the retained Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 for Great Britain. This revision follows their initial addition in April 2025.

This amendment was in response to concerns from the MedTech sector regarding disruption to healthcare services, including the NHS. As a result, the continued use of DP and UV-328 is now permitted in critical NHS applications while further investigations into these POP chemicals are conducted.

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to help stakeholders monitor key regulatory developments. SafeGuardS 078.25 provides further insight into the amendment’s scope, rationale and implications for industry.

Stakeholders are encouraged to review the full SafeGuardS 078.25 for further details.
