LOCAL GP instructor and veteran doctor of 40 years Jane Barker will co-host a talk on Breast Care for Women this week with Mary-Louise Myers of Esoteric Women’s Health.

One in eight Australian women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime and rates are rising. Detecting breast cancer at its earliest stages is the main goal of routine breast care.

Dr Jane Barker, who in a forty year career as a GP and medical educator has specialised in women’s health, will co-host the talk, pointing out that scientists are now attributing the rise in breast cancer rates to our lifestyle choices.

“What these figures show us is that support is needed for women to more deeply care for their own healthand for their breast health generally,” said Dr Barker.

Dr Barker, who has herself experienced breast cancer, said that when she was diagnosed she saw it as an opportunity to stop and reassess how she was living.

“Cancer forces us to consider our life and make changes, but why wait until we have a disease to realise that is it time to make a change?” Dr Barker said.

The World Health organisation early this month reported a 70% rise to nearly 25 million a year over the next 20 years. The UN’s public health arm says that half of these cases are preventable because they are linked to lifestyle.

Esoteric Women’s Health practitioner Mary-Louise Myers will join Dr Barker to discuss the importance of self-care in making supportive lifestyle choices, from her experience as a complementary health practitioner who consults with women in Australia and Internationally.

“To make positive lifestyle choices a woman first needs to have a loving relationship with her own body,” Myers states.

Myers has found that across the world women consistently report feeling anxious and disconnected from their bodies.

“Breast care is not only about cancer, it is about women developing nurturing relationships with themselves and making choices which support their well being.”

This talk is on this Thursday at the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre, 6.45 - 7.45pm - $5. All welcome. BOOKING essential: [email protected]
