BNP Partners Unveils New Conviction Buy List

BNP Partners has published a new conviction buy list in the aftermath of the stock rout on China’s mainland indices.

According to Shanghai based investment house, BNP Partners, just a week after central bank and regulator intervention halted sharp and protracted declines on China’s mainland stock indices Shanghai-based investment manager, BNP Partners has compiled a new revised conviction buy list that focuses on taking advantage of cheaper valuations that, in some cases, are up to 60% off all-time highs set at the heights of market euphoria in mid-June.

“Given the scale of the declines we’ve seen over the last few weeks, some might say that any stock that’s fallen over 50% is a screaming buy but we’re professionals; we’ve never been indiscriminate in our stock picking and, if anything, this clear out on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Composites means we have to be even more discerning when sorting the wheat from the chaff,” said Gerald E. Powers, Chief Investment Officer at BNP Partners by telephone from an investment conference in Beijing.

The firm, which has won recognition in several Asia-Pacific wealth and asset management industry rankings for index-beating returns, says the new list is comprised of 15 companies. “There’s a definite bias towards the technology sector – one we make no apology for – but there’s also an acknowledgement of the role that some fairly out-of-favor sectors will play in the not-too-distant future. We’ve paid homage to energy stocks like CNOOC and PetroChina as well a couple of miners. We’ve placed emphasis on stocks like JD.com and Tencent because, between them, those companies represent the bulk of the competition to Alibaba’s near-domination and their stocks fell quite sharply during the rout,” added Powers.

BNP Partners says it will publish the full list next week after disseminating it to clients.
