This press release describes the benefits students gain from attending Centennial College's Health Informatics Technology program. Among the highlights are two projects that allow students to use real world business applications.

Centennial College's exciting Health Informatics program is training students to design and develop the next wave of healthcare applications as well as modify and test software for existing ones. This exciting field - which involves collection, storage, retrieval, communication and optimal use of health related data - is rapidly gaining prominence as countries seek to manage and use health data appropriately and effectively.

The continuous evolution and expansion of the industry means that Health Informatics Technology students may launch careers in clinical, research and educational areas as software developers, health data analysts, database developers, systems implementation specialists, and business/ systems analysts.

Students study from fully-outfitted Progress Campus computer labs, which allow for a hands-on learning approach to topics such as analyzing and modeling data, developing healthcare databases and applying different computer medical-imaging techniques as well as software design methodologies, user-oriented interface design, structure of healthcare information systems, telehealth, data security and privacy in healthcare systems. Students also learn technologies such as C#, Java, J2EE, Oracle, MS-SQL Server, Unix/ Linux, Microsoft’s .NET, HTML/ XML, Rational/ WebSphere, Data warehousing and Data mining, and BI tools in healthcare systems and more.

The program's Health Informatics courses are recognized by a number of respected organizations. These accreditations signal to employers a high standard of learning. The Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) and the Canadian Council of Technician and Technologies (CCTT) jointly approved accreditation of this program in 2011. This joint accreditation is the first of its kind in Canada. Graduates from the program may apply for certified membership to either CIPS or their provincial engineering technology association. Additionally, the program holds national accreditation status from the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board and The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists recognizes the offering as meeting all the academic requirements for certification in the Technologist category.
