A capacitor once called a condenser, is a simple electrical device with two connections that stores energy in an electric field. Practical capacitors come in many types, but they all have at least two conducting parts (called plates) that are kept apart by a barrier (known as a dielectric). The conductors can be thin films, foils, sintered bits of metal conductive electrolytes, etc. The "nonconducting" material helps the capacitor hold more charge. A dielectric can be glass, clay, plastic film, air, vacuum, paper, mica, or an oxide layer. Capacitors are commonly found in electrical circuits and many everyday gadgets. An ideal capacitor does not waste energy as a resistance does. A capacitor holds energy as an electrostatic field between its plates. Diodes generally separate signals from a power source, combine signals, and convert AC power to DC power.
