A Flyback transformer differs from conventional transformers in that it stores energy in the magnetic core during the switch-on phase and releases it during the off phase. This method of energy transfer makes it ideal for isolated DC to DC as well as AC to DC power supplies.

A gapped magnetic core is one of the defining features of a Flyback Transformer. This prevents core saturation while permitting the transformer to store enough energy to transfer every cycle. With respect to the application, Flyback Transformers can operate in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) or Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM).

DCM designs are generally smaller and more efficient. They utilize a lower primary inductance, restrictive to duty cycle but leading to stability and simpler feedback control. On the contrary, CCM designs have lower peak and RMS currents which reduces EMI and the overall size of required capacitors and filters. Choosing between the two modes depends on your system’s efficiency requirements, control complexity, and component cost.
