Spoof Calls Surge in the US – Seniors and Small Businesses Paying the Price

United States — Landline spoofing calls are surging across the country, putting millions of Americans at risk—particularly older adults and small business owners. In 2024 alone, Americans received a staggering 52.8 billion robocalls, many of which used caller ID spoofing to appear as trusted sources like banks, the IRS, or even the police.

These fraudulent calls are far more convincing than typical spoof calls. Often, a real person is on the line—trained to sound official, urgent, and persuasive. Victims are pressured into acting quickly, often before they realize it’s a fraudulent attempt.

Older adults are some of the hardest hit. Many rely on landlines and trust what shows up on caller ID, making them prime targets. In 2024, seniors reported $2.3 billion in fraud losses, with those aged 80 and above facing the highest median losses. Sadly, many cases go unreported due to fear, confusion, or embarrassment.

Small businesses are also vulnerable. 34% of IT and security leaders say their companies have been affected by spoof calls, and 79% of credit unions and community banks reported over $500,000 in direct fraud losses in 2023. These fraudulent activities hurt more than just the bottom line—they damage reputations and customer trust.

Call-blocking technology offers one line of defense. Devices like the CPR Call Blocker, widely used in U.S. homes, help screen out spoof calls by using a preloaded database of known fraud numbers and allowing users to block new ones instantly. While no solution is perfect, call blockers provide essential protection for households and businesses alike.

“Landline spoofing may sound old-school, but the damage it causes is very real,” Chelsea Davies, COO of CPR Global Tech, says. “Our mission is to provide practical tools that help people stay protected, informed, and in control.”
