SEIKO Watch Quality, Innovation and Design

Posted November 6, 2014 by creationwatches

Seiko is a very big name as far as innovation and technology goes and only next to some Swiss brands on whom the majority crowd goes gaga.

Seiko’s designs are practical, even when flamboyant and fanciful. From extremely rugged to delicately ornamented, Seiko has showcased some of the best quality wristwear over the ears, be it in technology, in innovation or in design. In simple words, some can even be called epochal!

Seiko has bagged quite a few cutting-edge innovations that have kept the watchmaker churn out continuously and keep its name in the ‘world's first’ list; it’s all because Seiko’s belief in wristwatches being very intimate accessories. The best live in absolute harmony; others, see less to no more wrist-times. A watch’s interaction with the wearer decides the reassuring feel, which is often emotionally satisfying. Seiko's technological advancements only strengthened the bond.

This brings in the topic of emotional technology. Ergonomics is also a vital part of it. The emotional technology makes the interaction between a user and the watch more pleasurable and this is continuing ever since Seiko came out with the quartz. Prior to that, Seiko had to sacrifice somewhat on the design part, though the quality stayed intact. This is why earlier Seiko watches feel chunkier and heftier compared to today’s Astron, Kinetic...even simple mechanicals!

Let’s look at Seiko’s achievement over the years. The brand’s innovation ranges from designing the first watch with a LCD quartz (six-digit digital display; 1973) and the first multifunction digital watch (1975) to active matrix systems (2010) and GPS-controlled time recognizing all the 39 time zones (2012). The first TV watch or inbuilt sound-recording functions; analog quartz w/chronograph, the wrist-computer...we can go on the whole day on this. If you come across one, pick it up (if possible) and treasure the rarity.

Very few among us know that Automatic Mens Watch is also the first one to come out with an automatic power generating system for quartz watches, which over years, became Kinetic. Also, the high-end intelligent analog quartz watches are also a Seiko legacy; their’s were controlled by a CPU-IC.

Added to the list are the Scubamaster (the first computerised diver's watch), Perpetual calendar (first millennium-plus calendar), the world’s smallest ultrasonic micromotor, heat-powered (Thermic) watches, radio- controlled watches; the electrophoretic display module (see Seiko Spectrum) and of couse, the Spring Drive – the Spring Drive Spacewalk being its most spectacular outcome! You can read about them in the Seiko official website, so no point telling here anymore.

It all becomes possible because Automatic mens watches designers are flexible. They are talented and take pleasure in creating rooms for new technology to flow in. Constriction actually helps them to explore new design possibilities. Together, Seiko watch quality stands as a fine example of how well technical precision combines with a tradition of high performance and dressing –up know-hows.
