Category Management is a way to Procurement that is obtaining ground in both the private and public sectors. In Category Management items or facilities that have the same characteristics and are purchased from identical supply markets are classified together and treated as a discrete category or group.
These categories are then more accessible from a Procurement Transformation outlook because the products in a category need the same distributor market intelligence, the same sourcing plans and similar supplier relationship management schedule. Though these actions are not new, their application may need a change in recent organization roles and responsibilities and structures. Like any victorious change, the advantages want to be sold to the rest of the organization.
