Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric or mental disorder characterised by unstable behaviour, moods swings, and difficulty with relationships. Most people suffering from BPD usually have trouble in interpersonal connections, an unstable sense of self, significant affective disturbance, plus increased impulsivity, which could lead to a high prevalence of suicide or self-harm. BPD patients are also usually reluctant to treatment and as a result, are at high risk for acute or hazardous presentations, putting a strain on mental health resources.

“There has been much debate over the years about the effectiveness of BPD medication in the UK, particularly in treating different aspects of the disorder's psychopathology, but strong evidence currently exists for the use of the mood stabilisers lamotrigine and valproate semi sodium, as well as topiramate, in the effective treatment of BPD,” explained Dr Hugo de Waal – consultant psychiatrist at De Waal Psychiatry in London.

“BPD treatment aims to alleviate the proclivity to self-harm and emotional dysregulation, as well as to work on developing a more consistent sense of self and others, so that connections with oneself and other individuals, become more secure. Medication and various types of psychotherapy are widely used in combination to treat BPD, c-PTSD, and PTSD, as most research indicates that these combined treatment tactics produce superior results,” he added.

Dr Hugo de Waal is a psychiatrist - a medical practitioner who specialises in mental health - and psychiatrists like him typically use a combination of psychiatry and medication to diagnose and treat mental health issues. Dr de Waal boasts an impressive CV and has over 20 years of experience in the field of psychiatry, and he focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses such as PTSD, ADHD, ASD, and PPD at his private clinic in London.

Your initial appointment with Dr de Waal will include determining if and what mental health issue(s) you are dealing with and where you fit on the spectrum. Dr de Waal will also discuss your treatment options with you, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Assessments and follow-up sessions are available in-person or online for £365.00 for the initial assessment (60-minute session) and £550.00 for a comprehensive evaluation (90-minute session). A 60-minute ADHD assessment costs £675.00, and all 30-minute follow-up sessions cost £185.00.

If a person suspects that he or she or a loved one is suffering from psychosis (a mental disorder), it is critical to remember that the condition is treatable and to seek the assistance of a specialist as soon as possible, such as Dr de Waal.
