In the Bible, the number forty is significant. For instance, the Genesis flood of Noah is indicated as being the result of forty days and nights of rain. After Moses' encounter with Pharoah and the Exodus from Egypt, the Israelites are recorded as having wandered around the Sinai desert before entering the Promised Land for forty years. And Jesus spent forty days and nights in the Wilderness before His face to face Temptation encounter with Satan. Anderson bases her devotional on a forty day journey of discovery, sharing her experiences that led to the creation of this book while encouraging readers to journal about their own encounters with God while using the devotional.

"Someone once said that life is a journey," states Anderson. "Every now and then I convince myself that I have it all figured out. All of a sudden, life throws me a curve ball and I find myself between a rock and a hard place. Through it all, the pervading theme is that God is constantly pursuing me. I now realize that His purpose is to achieve a deeper level of intimacy with me, no matter what it takes."

The book is formtted with an inspired devotional thought corresponding to a Bible verse and a short prayer at the end. The book encourages reflect on what these mean directly to the reader.
