Q fever is an infection induced by Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium found worldwide. While infection in animals is common, humans can also get affected. Infections in humans occur through breathing in air or dust contaminated with the bacterium responsible for Q fever. In addition, contaminated clothing, hides, wool or straw may be the source of infection as well. Predominantly, Q fever is a high-risk occupational disease, primarily found in farmers, meat workers and vets.

The Q fever vaccine has been licensed since 1989 in Australia. The vaccination is highly effective in preventing Q fever infection in humans.
