Houston-based surgeon Dr. Thomas Taylor has had a long and extensive career in the medical field, spanning over three decades. He worked as an academic surgeon, both in his home country of the United Kingdom and in the United States, in Texas. He focused mainly on abdominal surgery, as well as laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery. As an academic, he was very prolific, publishing eight books and two hundred and fifty research papers. He also had a very positive impact on the field of abdominal surgery, holding ten United States patents.

Taylor began his surgical training in his home country of the United Kingdom. He had always had an interest in science, and had even received some education in the subject of engineering. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh, and then went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Manchester. He then trained in general surgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary before completing residencies at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. He then became a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dr Thomas Taylor Houston then started his career as a lecturer at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and then later moved to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he advanced to the position of Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery. He moved to the United States when he was invited by Dr. Michael DeBakey to become a professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He worked there for eight years before becoming Chief of Academic Surgery, Chief of Postgraduate Medical Education, and Surgical Program Director at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Houston.

Taylor has many interests outside of medicine. He is an avid singer, and has been a member of many choirs in both the UK and the US. He enjoys watching sports such as football, baseball, and cricket, and even played cricket when he lived in the United Kingdom. He also enjoys creating watercolor paintings to relax in his spare time.
