Bill Edwards Urges St. Petersburg Voters to Vote No on Proposed Dali Expansion

Before voting on the Referendum 1 question allowing the Dali Museum to expand, St. Petersburg voters should head to the polls equipped with the facts. Allowing the Dali to proceed with its ill-advised expansion plan will disrupt downtown St. Petersburg.

The referendum question seeks approval for the City of St. Petersburg to amend the Dali’s 99-year lease and allow them to begin construction of an expansion which would eliminate one of only two major ingress/egress access points into the Mahaffey Theater and the parking garage and will also negatively impact the highly touted and protected St. Petersburg waterfront.

Dali construction would negatively impact parking for the Duke Energy Center for the Arts and all of its partner organizations, which include the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Class Acts Youth Educational Performance Series, The Florida Orchestra, and more.

“The people should vote no on what amounts to a land-grab from the Dali,” said Bill Edwards, Chairman and CEO of the Big3 Entertainment Group, which operates the Mahaffey Theater. “The Dali may need City land to expand, but think about the impact of major construction to our operation and to the beautiful waterfront.”

If passed, the City of St. Petersburg would be allowed to renegotiate their contract with Big3 Entertainment, which would negatively impact operations and programming for the Theater.

While Mr. Edwards is not opposed to the growth and development of the Center for the Arts property, this proposed expansion has too many implications to ignore. Until all parties have had an opportunity to discuss publicly, St. Petersburg residents should vote NO on the Dali Expansion.
