A recent study suggests that dermal filler treatment can restore a youthful pattern when it comes to facial expressions. A study using 3D digital stereo photogrammetry, researchers were able to obtain the measurements of facial compression and stretch in thirty women, aged between forty-one and sixty-five years of age. The laboratory studied the before and after effects, especially in those women treated for moderate to severe NLF, nasolabial folds. These are the lines that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth. The scans were done six weeks post treatment.

The results were compared in a group of younger patients aged twenty-five to thirty-five, along with untreated women. The scans carried out prior to treatment showed higher stretch profiles in the nasolabial fold areas in older women when compared to the younger group. The follow up scans showed the older patients had significant reductions in strain and stretch across a complete range of facial expressions.
