Printing is a process used in our day to day life. This printing process is executed by printers which require inks so that the text, image, or any printable item can be displayed on the product canvas. Canvas is the base of the material where the printing process has to be applied. As these canvases are of different types like papers, cardboards, flexo-graphs, and other materials, the ink used in printers also has different variants to match the requirement of the base. Below mentioned are the different types of ink used in printing, their features, and the role of coating & varnishing in printing & packaging.

There are 2 main different types of inks produced by different printing ink manufacturers.
• Solvent-based Liquid Inks
• Water-based Inks

Solvent-Based Liquid Inks for Flexographic / Gravure Printing

Solvent-based liquid ink is used as printing inks for flexible packaging. These solvent-based printing inks work in inkjet printers. These solvent-based liquid inks are of different types such as flexographic inks, gravure printing inks, BOPP films printing inks, and PVC film inks. These solvent-based inks have three major parts, the carrier liquid, color, and resin.

Colors used in solvent ink are present in powder form, which later mixes with water to produce the perfect quality printing. The pigments in this printing ink are bonded together to make the color stick on the canvas and to protect it from any damage. The role of these solvent-based inks is to print on different flexographic materials like product packaging of bread wrappers, milk packaging, frozen foods packets, blister foil, HDPE woven sacks, laminating pouches, HDPP woven sacks, and other products that are used outdoors.

Water-Based Printing Inks for Different Substrates

Water-based printing ink has either colors or dyes of a mixed suspension in the solvent, with the water. Although, the major solvent in water-based inks is water itself. These water-based inks are generated for their specific application by holding certain properties. This liquid paper printing is used on different substrates according to the environment that the ink will be exposed to including the texture and color of the ink. The aim of using water-based printing inks is to eliminate the hazardous chemical from ink, not just to reduce the VOC that is present in it. These water-based inks have the role to print a certain text, design, or graphics on the canvas of various materials like craft papers, corrugated box papers, chromo papers, food packets, card-boards, normal foils, and many more.

Role Of Coating & Varnish in the Printing Industry

The varnish is a fully transparent hard protective finish applied on different types of printings while a coating is applied to cover the ink in-line of the printer as a part of the printing process.

Coating Solutions

The major need of coating products is to cover the substrate of the canvas. This coating procedure gives the ink a protective touch during the final printing. The perfect example of this ink coating is a product label on many bottles of cold-drinks, and labels of various other products.

Role of Varnishes

The role of Varnish is to increase the quality of printing on the product. Varnishes in printing can make a huge difference to normal printed paper or packaging of a product because this varnish helps to enhance the visual appearance of the print or packaging.

All above are the various roles of coating & varnishing in printing & packaging.

With the mentioned features, mechanisms, and roles of these printing inks, it is cleared that these 2 types of inks play an important role in the procedure of printing & packaging of different products.
