What is ayahuasca? Ayahuasca, also called Yagé, is a hallucinogenic infusion that has been used by indigenous peoples in the Amazon region for centuries. It contains a combination of substances and causes both physical and mental effects. The effects are felt between 15 and 60 minutes after ingestion and remain present for 2 to 6 hours.
The physical effects caused by ayahuasca depend on the composition of the infusion and the ingested dose. Normally the consumer will be hit first by a wave of nausea that can make him vomit, some may even experience mild diarrhea: the indigenous peoples consider that it is a cleansing effect to reach a state of purification before meeting the spirits or gods of nature. In addition, all parasites, such as worms, are eliminated from the body, freeing it from any distraction from the "old" reality and the body can thus absorb the active substances more easily.
The ayahuasca contains powerful hallucinogenic alkaloids and provokes a deep psychedelic experience. The use of different plants in the mixture modifies the effects, but the most affected of the senses during these psychedelic experiences under ayahuasca is vision. Consumers describe dream sequences, with the manifestation of spiritual (plant) aids, demonic creatures, deities and all sorts of animals.
