According to the American Kennel Club, the Rottweiler is calm and confident. They are also naturally reserved and friendly towards strangers. Rottweilers were originally bred to be cattle guard and herd dogs. They can become aggressive if they are not socialized early enough. It is not impossible to train a Rottweiler to be a good pet whether he or she is an adult dog or rescue dog. However, it is easier to start training them sooner.

Invite your guests to sit with your puppy when you bring it home. Rottweiler puppies are likely to be scared if they see people reaching out towards them. The puppy will start to take an interest in strangers and begin exploring them or sniffing them. They can then reach out and touch the animal. If you have a 95-130 pound lap dog, picking it up and holding it is not a good idea. You can take your puppy to a dog park so it can play with other dogs and people. This will teach the puppy that strangers should not be fearful. Socialization can also be achieved by walking around the neighbourhood or in a shopping mall where people will want to pet your cute puppy.

Introduce any other dogs to the house slowly if they are not already familiar with you. Before you bring the puppy home, take a toy or other toy from an older dog. The puppy should be able to smell the other dog. You can take something that the puppy has touched, such as a blanket or the same toy, and give it back to your older dog to inspect. You can introduce them in a neutral area, such as a park far from your home. Place the puppy in a place where it can smell and hear the other dogs when you bring it home.

The puppy will be able to smell and hear the older dog. Place the puppy in a crate so that they can interact with each other in a safe place. When they are comfortable, let them meet face-to-face. Always give the older dog first, before the younger. Pack leaders are the ones who eat first in nature. It will be easier to stop fighting if it becomes clear that an older dog is a higher rank than a younger one. Dogs will fight if their family treats them as equals and they feel the need to be in control. It is unnecessary to fight for dominance if it is already established.

Wolf pack leaders are determined by nature. Dogs who feel they are the pack leader are stressed and have to take on more responsibility. Dogs who know they are subordinate members of the pack or family are happier and will not fight for their dinner. The pack leader is the one who has control over the food. To show leadership, eat your meal first before the dog. Before you give the Rottweiler food, make sure to say a command. You can teach your Rottweiler to sit by gently, but firmly pressing down on its hindquarters until it's in a sitting position. Give the puppy a treat when it is sitting down. Do not reward a puppy for standing up, or running away, if it suddenly gets up.

Another command that is good to use is "settle". Gently place the puppy in a "sphinx"-like position and say "Settle." Before the Rottweiler receives its reward, it should be able to lie down and make no vocal noises. Give a command to your Rottweiler by approaching it with the bowl of food. If the Rottweiler obeys your command, you can place the bowl of food down and allow the dog to enjoy it unassisted. This is not a good idea as some dogs can become afraid of being touched while they eat. Do not repeat the command to a dog if he does not follow it. You can put the food aside and come back later. Continue this process until your dog obeys you. Ensure that your dog is hydrated during this time.
