Cleaning is an important process as we all know but it only promotes good hygiene by physically removing dirt, organic matters, and a majority of germs.

It does not destroy harmful microorganisms called pathogens, including, bacterias, viruses, and other microorganisms that can cause diseases and lead to serious health problems. So, other than cleaning, disinfection is required which can completely destroy these pathogens, and for that disinfectants are required.

What are disinfectants?
Disinfectants are antimicrobial chemicals that are applied to the surface of various non-living objects in order to destroy microorganisms that are living on the objects. Common disinfectants include alcohol, bleach, chloramine, chlorine dioxide, formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde, ozone, quaternary ammonium salts, silver dihydrogen citrate, and thymol.

Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)
Quats is the top choice among its consumers as it is very effective against a wide range of microorganisms and is quite affordable when it comes to pricing. It can be formed by adding variety of detergents to provide both cleaning and sanitizing ability. These disinfectants are extensively used in the medical sector.

Chlorine Compounds
They are highly recommended for disinfecting water storage facilities and medical equipment. These disinfectants are economical and can kill microorganisms quickly and are usually used for making sanitizers.

Alcohols
When diluted in distilled water, alcohols are effective against a wide range of bacteria and some times their higher concentrations are often needed to disinfect wet surfaces.

Iodophors
These are used for disinfecting semi-critical medical equipment. They can stain surfaces and have an unpleasant odor. Hence, not used in facility maintenance anymore.
