Who Were the Highwaymen?
In the 1950s and 60s, a group of self-taught Black artists began painting vivid, tropical Florida landscapes using inexpensive materials and bold brushwork. Lacking access to galleries due to segregation, they sold their art door-to-door and along the highways—earning the nickname “The Highwaymen.”
