On April 19, Save Mount Vernon will hold a rally in front of the Mount Vernon Board of Education building, located at 165 North Columbus Avenue in Mount Vernon to call on Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton, Schools Superintendent, Mount Vernon City School District, to resign. The organization claims that Dr. Hamilton has done nothing to quell the violence that has been plaguing the schools.
The most recent incident occurred on April 8, when a 16-year-old girl was killed and a 15-year-old girl was stabbed during a parade celebrating the boys’ high school basketball championship season. “This is a tragedy that could have been prevented,” said Jesse Van Lew, Founder, Save Mount Vernon. “We need to say enough is enough.”
Mr. Van Lew said, in the past few years, he has received numerous phone calls from parents who accused Dr. Hamilton of not doing anything to address the escalating number of violent incidents in Mount Vernon schools. He has also submitted written complaints by the parents which were not addressed.
“He didn’t act,” Mr. Van Lew said. “This is why Dr. Hamilton needs to resign. He has failed the system and our children.”
Attendees are asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. The rally starts at 6 p.m. For more information, call (914) 346-1118.
