Online Horse Bit Guide: Pelham Horse Bits
Pelham: There are rings for two reins on a Pelham bit. One is near the mouthpiece and is meant to function somewhat like a snaffle, using direct rein aids. The other is at the end of the shank, which employs the leverage action of a curb. Always use a curb chain with a Pelham, and make sure it lies flat against the horse’s lower jaw, in the groove just above the chin.

A Pelham with a very short shank is often referred to as a Tom Thumb.
Though not many hunters are shown in a Pelham, it is a popular bit in hunt seat equitation and medal classes because it gives the rider more precise control than a snaffle.
Short leather straps called bit converters can be buckled to both bit rings on each side of the mouthpiece, so that the rider can use only one rein, however, this eliminates the snaffle effect entirely.

Online Horse Bit Guide: Kimberwick Horse Bit
Kimberwick:  A kimberwick (also called a kimblewick or kimberwicke) is a curb bit for English riding that functions much like a Pelham only it is designed to be used with just one rein that exerts leverage action. The reins attach to D-shaped bit rings, and a variety of mouthpieces are available.
Some kimberwicks are designed with two slots for the reins. When the rein is placed in the lower slot, the leverage action is increased.
Hunter ponies are often shown in kimberwicks because it is a leverage bit utilizing only one rein, making it user-friendly for small children.
The kimberwick is the most popular bit in the hunter under saddle division at AQHA and APHA breed shows.

Despite the rather offensive name, gag bits can be useful training aids when used appropriately by a rider with skilled hands. The mouthpiece, which can vary greatly in severity, is awarded room to slide up and down the bit rings when the rider pulls back on the reins. If the rider continues to pull, the sliding action of the mouthpiece creates a pulley effect, exerting pressure across the top of the horse’s head through the
crownpiece of the headstall. For a gag bit to be both humane and effective, the rider must release rein pressure the moment the horse responds to the rein cue.
Though found in the tack room of many training barns, gag bits are not considered legal for many types of western performance disciplines.
Gag bits are permitted in barrel racing, where they’re widely popular. The bit’s design allows competitors to quickly rate (adjust) their horse’s speed.
Incorrect use of a gag bit can cause a horse to open its mouth, flip its head and rear.
