7/13/2022: Never Imagined is the latest addition to the urban fiction genre. A debut book by Charlie Mon, the story surrounds two pairs of friends, Trip and Drevon and Charles and Vernon, and their struggle to escape the streets of Las Vegas and San Bernardino.

Urban fiction, also known as street literature, is an unconventional literary genre, so it remains self-published for the most part. It primarily encompasses people living in low-income and high-needs neighborhoods in urban areas. Despite the daunting vocabulary that comes with the territory of urban fiction, Charlie Mon manages to incorporate platonic and romantic love in Never Imagined.

“My story starts with an arrest and ends with a murder. That’s not shocking for urban fiction, which often dabbles in crime and punishment,” said Mon when asked to describe his book. “The truly unusual aspect of my book is the closure, the love gained and lost; the friendship lost and gained. That’s what makes my book special. I didn’t want it to fit a mold, so I decided to take a little something from every genre.

“It’s still urban fiction, mind you. It’ll still take you aback with graphic language substituted for detailed descriptions. But it’ll also have hope, which is a rare feat for any character on the streets, fictional or nonfictional,” he finished.

Never Imagined kicks off with an arrest that sends one friend to prison and the other to probation in San Bernardino, California. Trip and Drevon are inseparable and partners in crime in more than just words. After they’re convicted, Trip is sentenced to prison time in the Nevada Youth Authority, whereas Drevon is sent on probation to San Bernardino, where Vernon, his father, awaits his return.

What follows is a page-turning tale of hope, disappointment, love, and deception, culminating in the ultimate sin: murder.

Never Imagined is currently out in most online stores. It’s the first book in the same-name series, with the second book, Never Imagined II: Yin and Yang, coming out soon.
