[SALT LAKE CITY, OCTOBER 11, 2016] – Walker Pediatric Dentistry, a practice that provides dental health care for children, has introduced their restorative services. Treating children with severe dental decay, these dental procedures prevent pain and further damage to teeth.

Pulp Therapy

The first set of teeth or “baby teeth” are often so small that if decay occurs, it reaches the dental nerve much faster. Walker Pediatric Dentistry offers pulp therapy treatments for cases like this to prevent pain and possible damage to the future permanent tooth. The treatment also goes by the name of pulpectomy, pulpotomy, or root canal, depending on the severity of the decay.

Severe tooth decay that has reached the nerve and formed an abscess may require a full extraction. Other times, the procedure is similar to the one performed on an adult tooth where the tooth is cleaned and irrigated, its nerve chamber dried out and filled in, then restored with a crown.

“Untreated decay, even in baby teeth, can lead to serious infections, early tooth loss, and other problems such as speech development, self-esteem issues, and pain,” says the Salt Lake City-based practice.

Tooth Extractions

Children often naturally lose their baby teeth between the ages of 6 and 12 but Walker Pediatric Dentistry says that sometimes, severe decay or injury makes extractions necessary. There are also times when this procedure is necessary to prepare the child for corrective orthodontic procedures or to reduce the length of time that a child may need braces in the future.

A childhood injury near the mouth could damage gums, nerves, and blood vessels near the teeth, possibly causing further injury to their future permanent teeth. Walker Pediatric Dentistry offers extractions to prevent this situation from happening.
