Indonesian Constitution , the 1945 Constitution , explaining that Indonesia is a democratic country . President to perform his leadership must be responsible to the Assembly as a representative of the people . Therefore it Hierarchy is the highest authority of the people through a system of representation by means of elections . In the era of President Sukarno , Indonesia had embraced guided democracy in 1956. Indonesia has also been using a pseudo democracy ( Pancasila democracy ) in the era of President Soeherto until 1998 when it was overthrown by Suharto era student movement . Student movement which has taken a lot of property and lives happily paid with smiles and gratitude when President Soeharto announced " quit as President Indonesua " on May 21, 1998 . After ending the era Seoharto Indonesia back into the country truly democratic from then on . Democratic elections in 1999 won by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle .
In 2004 for the first time the Indonesian nation held presidential elections . This is a new history in the life of Indonesian democracy
