When Death Picks Favorites is a multi-layered novel that delves into the long shadow that World War II has cast over survivors: both soldiers and civilians alike. Through the intricately woven stories of two men – a Greek-American soldier and a German officer, authors Lefteris Sakkas and Dimitra Iconomou provide an immersive look at the guilt, trauma, and psychological toll of war.
Meticulously researched details transport readers directly into pivotal moments of WWII. Over 100 footnotes deepen understanding of the era's complexity. Yet this story transcends facts and figures to uncover deeper human truths: the unpredictable nature of conflict and the persistence of its echoes long after peace returns.
"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
- George Santayana
When Death Picks Favorites unveils indelible scars left by trauma and loss, underscoring war's capacity to irrevocably alter individual psyches and destinies. First published in Greek in 2010, this expanded English translation makes the narrative accessible to broader audiences worldwide. It promises to resonate with WWII historical fiction enthusiasts while offering invaluable insight for veterans, mental health workers, and all who seek to comprehend war's enduring mark on the human heart.
Poetic yet unflinching, When Death Picks Favorites reminds readers that the repercussions of cruelty and violence dim slowly. Healing begins by acknowledging shadows that are cast over survivors decade after decade. This stark narrative thus serves as a cautionary tale for future generations: we disregard the echoes of conflict at our peril.
