Germany's Osram Company announced on November 23 that the new LED chip plant in Kulim, Malaysia, is scheduled to start operating as scheduled. Two years ago, OSRAM announced the establishment of a new LED chip plant in Kulin, which is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2017. This is an important part of Osram's "diamond" innovation and growth plan. As the first phase of the factory was completed, OSRAM invested a total of 370 million euros. Next, the plant will undergo a two-phase expansion with a total investment of 1 billion euros, including the expansion of LED assembly capacity in the OSRAM Global Plant Alliance.

OSRAM Group CEO Olaf Berlien said: "Kulim factory completed as scheduled. OSRAM LED business in the near future reached a high growth rate of 19%. We further expand new capacity under such momentum in the investment in Kulim, which is also proof of our efforts to revolutionize technology and transform into high-tech companies: 10 years ago, traditional lighting accounted for 80% of OSRAM's business; today, two-thirds of OSRAM's sales come from its semiconductor-based business"

According to Aldo Kamper, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, the Kulim factory reported very impressive productivity and the Kulim plant was able to renovate all the street lighting in big cities such as New York, Rio, Hong Kong, and Berlin for a week. If you want to upgrade street lighting throughout the world to LED, the Kulim factory only needs to specifically produce for 5 and a half years. Compared with traditional street lighting, LED lighting can save nearly 80%. In addition, the LED lamp has both excellent color stability and brightness adjustment speed, and when the streets are empty, the a corresponding reduction in lighting brightness.

It is reported that the blue light LED chips produced by the Osram Kulim factory can generate white light through the conversion layer. The chip can be used for general lighting (such as the above-mentioned public street lighting), can also be used for building facade lighting, private and commercial inside and outside lighting, billboard lighting and plant lighting, and other special applications. By 2018, the global LED general lighting market is expected to reach 6 billion euros, of which about 6% is for street lighting. It is estimated that by 2020, the market will grow at an average annual rate of 7%. In 2018, the overall market of optoelectronic components (including general lighting) will reach 17.5 billion euros.

After the second phase of the Kulim plant, OSRAM also plans to produce LED chips for high-end applications such as automotive lighting and video projection in Kulin. The site is located on a green field, so the design has a high degree of freedom. In addition, the new factory represents the latest technology. The 6-inch wafer production system produces 125% more LED chips per wafer in a single cycle compared to 4-inch technology. OSRAM is currently investing globally to expand six of its LED manufacturing networks. As a result, OSRAM is also expanding its Regensburg plant, which currently employs 2,500 and is planning to recruit 1,000 employees. The plant mainly produces advanced LED chips and laser diodes for high-quality automotive headlights, as well as infrared diodes for sensors. These sensors can be applied to face recognition in mobile phones or smart-assist systems such as ride-distance control
