The journey to building the Wright Gliders was long and one big adventure, symbolic of the product of the journey as well.

The Wright brothers always had a passing interest in flight, but in 1878, the boys’ father gave them a toy flying helicopter powered by strands of twisted rubber. They experimented with the toy extensively, but it wasn’t until the famed glider pioneer Otto Lilienthal died in a glider crash that was widely publicized, did the Wright brothers begin to take an active and keen interest in flight.

They lapped up all the information available locally, and in 1899 approached the Smithsonian library for all their work on aeronautics. Based on their extensive reading, the Wright brothers built their first aircraft, a biplane kite, in the summer of 1899. Encouraged by this success, the brothers built and flew two crafts that we now call the Wright Glider in 1900 and 1901.

The Wright brothers used the 1901 Wright Glider primarily as a kite with no pilot aboard to test its performance. However, they did make a few free glides with Wilbur Wright as pilot on the Wright Glider. Their tests proved that the Wright Gliders did have a few errors that needed rectification. They were at a crucial juncture and began to question their research.

In 1902, the Wright brothers built another Wright Glider, their third Wright Glider, based on all their experiments and it was a tremendous success. They were successful in rectifying the flaws in the earlier Wright Gliders, and in 1902, they were able to make between seven hundred to a thousand flights on the Wright Glider.

They now knew that they were on the threshold of something big, and kept at their experiments till the finally built the Wright Military Flyer, the world’s first military aircraft.

Given this incredible history, and the gift the aircraft is to modern transport today, sitting in a Wright Flyer reproduction of the Wright Glider is an incredible opportunity. It traces back to experiments from 1900, 1901, and 1902, long before any of us were even born.
