2024 1st Labthink Webinar

Posted April 3, 2024 by LisaPaulinet

The 1st group of Labthink Webinars of 2024 was held successfully in March.

Three respective webinars were held via Zoom Meeting, of which, one was on Mar. 19th for Asian customers, one was on Mar. 20 for European customers, and one was on Mar.27 for American customers. About 200 industrial participants attended our webinars.

Mr. Martin Bryant, Sales Director of Labthink International, Inc. was the lecturer, and he gave a wonderful presentation.
• Basic knowledge about permeation tests.
• How to correctly choose the testers in need.
• Labthink will be the new leader in permeation measurement.
Mr. Martin Bryant introduced the definition and significance of permeation test with vivid examples. Then, he briefly introduces the historical development of permeation testers. Based on Labthink’s research capability and his profound experiences, Martin provided methods on how to choose the right permeability tester.
In the Q&A session, participants discussed many questions enthusiastically with Labthink technicians. Even after the meeting, more questions continued to come up. Those questions had to be answered after the webinar.
Options for Gas Permeation Measurement
When selecting a gas permeation tester, the initial step is to identify the gas being tested. Here are some recommendations based on the type of gas:
• If O2 is the only gas to be tested, the company can choose either the Coulometric Method or Manometric Method.
• As to other gases, it should be Manometric Method only.
• If both 02 and other gases are to tested, it should be the Manometric Method only.
For Gas Permeation Measurement, if test gas is confirmed, it means the test method is confirmed. The second step is to check the test range. Different methods have their respective testing ranges.
• For High barrier materials, lower than 0.1 cm3/(m2•d), should choose Coulometric Method.
• For Medium barrier materials, from 0.1-200cm3/(m2•d), it can choose both.
• For low barrier materials, higher than than 200cm3/(m2•d), it would be better to choose the Manometric Method.
Options for Water Vapor Permeation Measurement
For Water Vapor Permeation Measurement, there are 4 different testing methods. Usually, the first step is to check the industry of the user company. Standards applicable to different industries have basic regulations. For example:
Food & Pharmaceutical Industry is the most common industry of water vapor permeation measurement. Although there is no clear industry standard dictating which method to use, there is industrial practice, that is, most industrial customers prefer to choose Infrared Sensor Method.
Electronic, Solar Panels & OLED Industries. Since the transmission rate is extremely low, it is more likely to choose Electrolytic Sensor Method. Because this method of sensor can detect water vapor at a very low level.
Building Materials & Waterproof Textiles. Those industries have clear industry practices specifying the Gravimetric Method.
Industry choices are not blindly selected, and are based on corresponding material properties and characteristic analysis of test methods. Just like that of Gas Permeation Measurement, the second step is to check the test range. Different methods have their most efficient testing ranges.
• For Ultra High Barrier materials, lower than 0.001 g/(m2•day), Electrolytic Sensor Method is more recommended.
• For High Barrier materials, from from 0.001 to 40 g/(m2•day), it would be better to choose the Infrared Sensor Method.
• For Medium & Low Barrier materials, it is suggested to choose the Gravimetric Method & Humidity Sensor Methods.
Other Considerations – Combo Tester
In addition to test gas, industry, and test range, there are many other factors that affect the user’s choice. Such as the tester levels, usually we have high level and entry level testers, which are classified not only by the number of cells, but also by the tester’s performance.
At the same time, based on user company’s needs, Labthink has also developed Combo tester, such as 2-in-one or 3-in-one tester, that is, multiple test items can be performed within one tester. This kind of combo tester was newly developed and was introduced in a previous seminar: Sensor Packs.
