Carbon dioxide and Oxygen properties can be tested using Labthink’s VAC-V2. This versatile gas permeability analyzer can handle permeation measurement through materials up to 3mm thick exposed to a variety of gases. The wide measurement range makes it suitable for working with high and low barrier materials. Dedicated oxygen permeability analyzers such as OX2/230 and C230 series have been effective for barrier measurement of materials derived from chitosan, a common polymer extracted from the waste of crustacean shells.
Water Barrier properties of samples can be studied by Labthink’s C360 series (1,2). Gravimetric WVTR analysis is an established method of measuring water vapor barrier properties of medium to high barrier materials. The C360 series follows ASTM E96 with an automated weighing system, to determine weight loss or weight gain in a dish sealed by the test material. Automation of the manual E96 methods results in more reproducible test results and less human error.
The gravimetric method is suitable for a wide range of materials including paper and compostable materials. Other analyzers are available for infrared and electrolytic measurements needed for accurate determination of WVTR of high barrier materials.
Thickness and mechanical properties can be analyzed by Labthink’s Auto Tensile Testers and thickness measurement instruments (3,4). Other devices in the company’s catalog can assist with the measurement of coefficient of friction, heat sealing capability, ink adhesion and crush resistance.
