New Delhi, March 22, 2016: A team of 36 doctors had successfully performed rare and complex liver transplantation to save the life of 46 year old individuals. Dr. Naimish N. Mehta and his team constructed liver by using two lobes of liver donated by the family members of the patient.

A very rare surgical procedure was conducted for 18 hours for construction of liver for living the life of Sameer Mitra, a 46 year individual from West Bengal. Known for performing and supervising more than 725 liver transplantations, Dr. Naimish N. Mehta has supervised and performed the surgical procedures with other doctors for saving the life of the patients who was suffering from cryptogenic cirrhosis.

According to doctors, the patients was at advance stage of liver damage and the case was further complicated by the weight of the patients, which was at the time of surgery was 93 kilograms. The patients had already visited several hospitals, where he was advised to undergo liver transplant. The procedures of the liver transplantation were not carried out earlier, due to unavailability of donors.

“A suitable donor for the patients was not found out by the family as he was overweight. The weight of a normal patient weight about 2% of the body weight and minimum weight of liver required for undergoing liver transplantation is .8% but the weight of available liver in this case was about 730 grams which is far less than required amount”, a senior liver transplant specialist from the sir ganga ram hospital said.

Liver Transplant in Delhi was carried out by putting two liver portions donated by family members together and connected the veins and allowed to pass through heart of patients, in order to ensure proper blood flow. The process followed is carried out is known as re-perfusion. The whole liver construction and transplantation procedures took nearly 18 hours to complete and the life of the patient was successfully saved.
