Rats Bite Children While Sleeping in Housing Association Home

Tenants in social homes in some areas of Liverpool live in very poor conditions as they continue to be faced with several issues of housing disrepair such as damp and rodent infestation.

Some of the housing disrepair issues people living in housing association homes are having to deal with include rats, rising damp and black mould. In some of the shocking pictures shared online, these vulnerable tenants live in very poor conditions in Liverpool.
A case is that of a man who was found sleeping in a tent on his bed due to the amount of water leaking through his ceiling. In another case, a couple said their children were bitten by rats as they slept in a house full of damp and structural problems.
The director of Home Rescue UK, Gareth Chitty said that these are only a few of the appalling conditions he and his team come across in his job. The Liverpool Echo reports that since 2020, Gareth and his team have helped hundreds of people living in social homes in disrepair across Liverpool and further afield.
Gareth said: "These tenants are pleading for proper work and they will wait in some cases up to a year for the housing inspector to even attend, and then when he or she does the situation is being blamed on the tenant breathing too much, showering too much, cooking too much and they're not getting offered proper repairs."
In a recent report made by the Building Research Establishment, it is said that housing disrepair in England could cost the NHS £1.4billion a year in treatment bills and that half of this will be caused by residents exposed to severe cold as a result of house defects.
An anonymous single mum from Bootle said that she reached out to Home Rescue UK after spending six years trying to get the correct repairs for the black mould and rising damp in every room in her home. She lamented that it was very severe such that whenever it rains, water pours into her living room which caused her Television to blow up while she sat on the sofa. She couldn’t even decorate her room because everything was being ruined by the damp and black mould.
The condition of her home, according to her, also affected her health as she said that her PTSD became ten times worse as a result of the disrepair of her home. She added that her housing association failed to realise the full extent of the problem despite several attempts as they would always blame it on condensation. When works were however carried out, they were substandard and in other times the workmen never showed up.
