The former town hall had become so ruined by 1858 that it was decided to hold a competition to design a new building. The old structure was demolished, and the new structure, designed by Poulton and Woodman (Reading architects), was dedicated in 1860 by Richard Neville, the fourth Lord Braybrooke.

The Reading to Guildford railway opened around this time, allowing rail passengers to travel to London via Reading. When the Staines to Reading line was completed in 1856, a more direct service became available. In 1980, the Wokingham train station had ten employees. The current station footbridge has been built uniquely from the railway line. In the year 1920, the Thames Valley Traction Company began operating a regular bus service through Wokingham.
